Over the past decade, Italy has been the first country in Europe to focus on the need of curbing the population decline in non-urban territories, by approving the National Strategy for Inland Areas (SNAI). The Italian government can provide the leverage to fully deploy the economic and social development potential of inland areas, only by guaranteeing the essential services for citizens.

Systemic reflections and new approaches are required, investigating the potential of ecosystem services, the so-called "metro mountain" and of the natural capital of these territories.
